Venice High School's Students for Public Health Advocacy

About four years ago, several students approached me with concerns regarding the food on our campus. As time passed, about 12 students combined their efforts into what is now called The Students for Public Health Advocacy Club. They meet at least twice a week during lunch, and on the weekends, as needed, to work on school food policy and nutrition advocacy.

The following is an example of some of the activities in which they participate:

  • Conduct surveys and taste tests
  • Plan school and community health festivals
  • Assist in the development of new food/beverage products
  • Provide assistance to the media, elected officials, and vendors
  • Develop and implement healthy food and beverage policies
  • Attend meetings that address student health concerns
  • Educate the community about the importance of healthy living
  • Network and strategize with other student activists
